EDSL402 Introduction to School Leadership and Management 2

Effective management and strong leadership is the key to a successful school, where children thrive and are able to achieve their full potential. This unit builds on the learning in EDSL401 Introduction to School Leadership and Management 1, but will focus more on the issue of educational leadership in schools. Community approaches to leadership and management will be examined. Student-teachers will be given the opportunity to shadow an experienced school leader to enable them to relate the theory covered during the unit to actual practice. Wherever possible, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will be used to support the teaching and learning in this unit

EDRE402 Religious Studies or Ethics Specialism 2

The purpose of the Religious Studies or Ethics specialism is to give student-teachers a deeper understanding of aspects of Religious Studies or Ethics. These may include The Cultural Environment and Citizenship from a Christian Perspective and Professional Ethics. This unit will continue to develop an awareness of the links between Religious Studies and other subjects. This will enable student-teachers to apply their knowledge and to teach the subject more creatively and effectively. They will also be able to support colleagues with their planning, teaching and assessment in Religious Studies. The unit will give the student-teachers the opportunity to become Religious Studies curriculum leaders in their school communities.

EDCD402 Community Development Specialism 2

The purpose of the ‘Community Development Specialism 2’ is to give student-teachers a deeper understanding of aspects of the Community Development subject areas: Health Education, Physical Education or Personal Development and the development of units of work and teaching aids. As well as developing skills in teaching the subject, this unit will develop an awareness of the links with other subjects. This will enable student-teachers to apply their knowledge and to teach the subject more creatively and effectively. They will also be able to support colleagues with their planning, teaching and assessment in Community Development. The unit will give the student-teachers the opportunity to become Community Development curriculum leaders in their school communities.

EDSC402 Science Specialism 2

EDSC 402 is a semester 8 science course offered in the fourth year of Bachelor in Education (Primary Teaching). The purpose of the ‘Science Specialism’ unit is to enable student-teachers to explore the subject in greater depth and understand more fully the nature of science. This will enable them to apply their knowledge and to teach the subject more creatively and effectively. They will also be able to support colleagues with their planning, teaching and assessment in science. The unit will give the student-teachers the opportunity to become curriculum leaders in their subject.


EDRM402 Research Project

The purpose of the ‘Research Project’ specialism is to give student-teachers a wider and deeper understanding of research projects, as well as developing the skills to apply them in various environments. The student-teachers will be given the opportunity to appreciate the purpose of designing sound research projects. They will also be able to support colleagues in developing research projects. It will give the student-teachers the opportunity to become research leaders in their school communities. In this unit the student-teachers will have the opportunity to carry out a small scale school based research project. Where appropriate, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will be used to support the teaching and learning in this unit.

EDMA402 Mathematics Specialism 2

The purpose of the ‘Mathematics Specialism’ is to give student-teachers a wider and deeper understanding of the Mathematics subject content. As well as developing skills in teaching the Mathematics content, it will develop an awareness and appreciation of the links within the Mathematics subject content and links with other subjects. This will enable the student-teachers to integrate and strengthen similar content across all subjects and make children aware that all subjects are interrelated. The student-teachers will learn how to identify and support children with special gifts and talents to progress further. They will also be able to support colleagues with their planning on how to better support students’ progressive learning. The unit will give them the opportunity to become Mathematics subject leaders in their school communities.

The purpose of the ‘English Specialism 2’ is to give student-teachers a wider and deeper understanding of the English language.This will enable them to apply their knowledge and to teach the subject more creatively and effectively.They will also be able to support colleagues with their planning, teaching and assessment in English.The unit will give the student-teachers the opportunity to become curriculum leaders in their subject.
