EDRE401 Religious Studies or Ethics Specialism 1

The purpose of the Religious Studies or Ethics specialism is to give student-teachers a deeper understanding of aspects of Religious Studies or Ethics. These may include World Religions, Contemporary Issues from a Christian Perspective or Professional Ethics. As well as developing skills in teaching Religious Studies, this unit will develop an awareness of the links between Religious Studies and other subjects. It will enable student-teachers to apply their knowledge and to teach the subject more creatively and effectively. They will also be able to support colleagues with their planning, teaching and assessment in Religious Studies. The unit will give the student-teachers the opportunity to become Religious Studies curriculum leaders in their school communities.

EDSL401 Introduction to School Leadership and Management 1

Effective management and strong leadership are the key to a successful school, where the students thrive and are able to achieve their full potential. This unit will introduce student-teachers to the principles of school management and how this relates to the broader issues of school leadership. Community approaches to School Leadership and Management will be examined. This will prepare the student-teachers to take on roles in the school, beyond that of a classroom teacher. Wherever possible, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will be used to support the teaching and learning in this unit.

EDCD401 Community Development Specialism 1

The purpose of the ‘Community Development Specialism 1’ is to give student-teachers a deeper understanding of aspects of the Making a Living subject areas: Agriculture, Home Economics, practical skills, Design and Technology, Commerce or Community Development and the development of units of work, teaching aids or design briefs for projects. As well as developing skills in teaching the subject, this unit will develop an awareness of the links with other subjects. This will enable student-teachers to apply their knowledge and to teach the subject more creatively and effectively. They will also be able to support colleagues with their planning, teaching and assessment in Community Development. The unit will give the student-teachers the opportunity to become Community Development curriculum leaders in their school communities.

EDHU401 Humanities Specialism 1

The purpose of the ‘Humanities Specialism 1’ is to give student-teachers a deeper understanding of aspects of the Humanities subject content in History, Contemporary Issues or Society and Government in Papua New Guinea. As well as developing skills in teaching humanities, it will develop an awareness of the links between the various Humanities topic areas and other subjects. This will enable student-teachers to apply their knowledge and to teach the subject more creatively and effectively. The unit will give the student-teachers the opportunity to become curriculum leaders in their school communities. They will also be able to support colleagues with their planning, teaching and assessment in humanities.

EDSC401 Science Specialism 1

The purpose of the ‘Science Specialism’ unit is to enable student-teachers to explore the subject in greater depth and understand more fully the nature of science. This will enable them to apply their knowledge and to teach the subject more creatively and effectively. They will also be able to support colleagues with their planning, teaching and assessment in science. The unit will give the student-teachers the opportunity to become curriculum leaders in their subject.

EDRM401 Research Methods

The purpose of the ‘Research Methods’ specialism is to give student-teachers a wider and deeper understanding of research methods. As well as developing skills in using the research methods as a tool to inform their teaching practices, the student-teachers will also be given the opportunity to appreciate the purposes and value of using research data to inform planning of school activities. This will enable them to apply their knowledge and to teach more creatively and effectively. They will also be able to support colleagues with their planning of research activities. It will give the student-teachers the opportunity to become research leaders in their school communities. Where appropriate, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will be used to support the teaching and learning in this unit.

EDMA401 Mathematics Specialism 1

The purpose of the ‘Mathematics Specialism’ is to give student-teachers a wider and deeper understanding of the Mathematics subject content. As well as developing skills in teaching the Mathematics content, it will develop an awareness and appreciation of the links within Mathematics subject content and links with other subjects. This will enable the student-teachers to integrate and strengthen similar content across all subjects and make children aware that all subjects are interrelated. The student-teachers will learn how to identify and support children with special gifts and talents to progress further. They will also be able to support colleagues with their planning on how to better support students’ progressive learning. The unit will give them the opportunity. This will enable the student-teachers to become Mathematics subject leaders in their school communities.

EDEN401 English Specialism 1

The purpose of the ‘English Specialism 1’ is to give student-teachers a wider and deeper understanding of English.As well as developing skills in using the English language as a tool, the student-teachers will also be given the opportunity to develop an appreciation of novels, drama and poetry.This will enable them to apply their knowledge and to teach the subject more creatively and effectively.They will also be able to support colleagues with their planning, teaching and assessment in English.The unit will give the student-teachers the opportunity to become curriculum leaders in English.
