EDRE102 Contemporary issues from a Christian Perspective

This unit will enable student-teachers to teach various ‘Contemporary Issues from a Christian Perspective’ at Elementary, JuniorPrimary and SeniorPrimary levels. Student-teachers acquire in-depth knowledge about important contemporary issues embedded in the Melanesian culture and way of living, and discuss them in dialogue with the Christian principles and values. As well as learning the relevant subject knowledge, student-teachers will learn how to plan, teach and assess the content in an interactive and stimulating environment at each level. Wherever possible learning should be practical and take place outside the classroom.

EDHU102 Papua New Guinean History and Contemporary Issues

This unit will enable student-teachers to teach ‘Papua New Guinean History and Contemporary Issues’ at Elementary, JuniorPrimary and SeniorPrimary levels. As well as learning the relevant subject knowledge, student-teachers will learn how to plan, teach and assess the content in an interactive and stimulating environment. Using a range of historical sources will be a feature of this unit.

EDPD102 Teaching Skills and Strategies and 4 weeks Practicum

This unit equips student-teachers with knowledge of ‘Teaching Skills and Strategies’ for a range of educational contexts. Student-teachers will develop and demonstrate the skills necessary for designing and teaching effective lessons. They will demonstrate the appropriate use of a wide range of teaching strategies and will be expected to consider how different approaches to teaching and learning can be applied in the classroom. ICT will be an important aspect of this unit.This unit includes an introduction to theories of learning and practical application will occur through lesson observations, peer teaching, and micro teaching in real classroom settings. There will be a four week practicum, which will be an essential part of this unit and student-teachers will be required to pass this element of the unit before being allowed to progress on to the next part of the program.

EDMA102 MEASUREMENT

This unit will enable student-teachers to teach ‘Measurement’ at Elementary, JuniorPrimary and SeniorPrimary levels. As well as learning the relevant subject knowledge, student-teachers will learn how to plan, teach and assess the content in an interactive and stimulating environment at each level. Wherever possible, learning should be practical and take place outside the classroom. Mathematical problem-solving skills will be an important feature in this unit.

EDEN102 Oral Language Development

This unit will enable student-teachers to teach 'Oral Language Development' at the Elementary, Junior Primary, and Senior Primary levels. This will include Speaking and Listening skills, phonological awareness, and phonics. As well to learning the relevant subject knowledge, student-teachers will learn how to plan, teach and assess the content in an interactive and stimulating environment at each level. Wherever possible, learning should be practical and take place outside the classroom in the real world. Where appropriate, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will be used to support the teaching and learning in this unit.

EDCD102 Making a Living (Resource Management, Better Living

This unit will enable student-teachers to teach ‘Making a Living’ at SeniorPrimary levels. Two strands covered in this unit are managing resources and better living. The unit supports the Government’s Vision 2050 to empower people through improved education and life skills. Learning integrates skills of agriculture, home economics, design and technology and commerce. Using a process of investigating, planning and designing, producing, marketing and evaluating, student-teachers engage in projects for family purposes or to generate income. They develop necessary knowledge and skills to implement well-organized practical learning activities.
