Year 1 Pedagogy
This is a learning guide for pedagogy. It will help student-teachers to develop knowledge and skills to facilitate active learning. Student-teachers will learn how to write lesson plans, construct content standards, develop content and design learning activities. Using lesson plans student-teachers devise a range of teaching aids and develop teaching skills.
The concept of peer-teaching and micro-teaching will be introduced through weekly teaching experience and start developing the skills of beginning teachers. Pedagogy is an enrichment program related EDPD 102 Teaching Skills and Strategies but it is practical based where novices have hands-on experiences to equip and acquaint themselves with teaching-based competency skills and knowledge.
EDRE101 Introduction to World Religions
This unit will introduce student-teachers to the major world religions and their existing philosophies as well as their historical, geographical and spiritual backgrounds. In today’s world the increasing movement of people, due to phenomena such as migration, is a great challenge that requires an attitude of openness to different cultures, religions and traditions. As well as learning about the existence and differences between the major world religions and philosophies, student-teachers will be guided to see the importance of respect towards other peoples’ beliefs and religious traditions.

EDHU101 The Natural Environment (Geography)
This unit will enable student-teachers to teach ‘The Natural Environment’ at Elementary, Junior Primary and Senior Primary levels. As well as learning the relevant subject knowledge, student-teachers will learn how to plan, teach and assess the content in an interactive and stimulating environment at each level. Wherever possible, learning should be practical and take place outside the classroom. Geographical skills will be an important feature in this unit. Where appropriate, information and Communication Technology (ITC) will be used to support the teaching and learning in this unit.
EDSC101 Living Things and the Environment
EDSC 101 is a course offered in Semester one of studies towards Diploma/Bachelors in Education - Primary Teaching.
This new science material (STEPMAS SBC Science) encompasses the three broad categories of science; and they are; Life Science, Physical Science and Earth & Space.
In the Programmed
Specification Document” (PSD) this course was taught as “Living Things and the Environment. The focus was more on Life
Sciences.
This course is
fundamental in the primary science education. It covers the content knowledge
of the science environment that the primary science curriculum focuses on,
especially the current reformed SBC materials.
This unit will enable student-teachers to teach Life science, Physical science and Earth science at Elementary, Lower Primary and Upper Primary levels. As well as learning the relevant subject knowledge, student-teachers will learn how to plan, teach and assess the content in an interactive and stimulating environment at each level. Wherever possible, learning should be practical and take place outside the classroom. Scientific enquiry skills will be an important feature in this unit.
EDPD101 Professional Ethics
Professional Ethics is a unit offered in Semester One as a Diploma/Bachelor in Teaching
Program for Year One student-teachers at Divine Word University, OLSH Kabaleo Rabaul
Campus.
The content of the unit teaches student-teachers about the standards expected of them
in the teaching profession. The unit encourages student-teachers to strive to be role-models and
ethical leaders and to act within the community in a manner that enhances the prestige of the
profession.
As future professionals, student-teachers need to learn the mechanisms of how to guide their
students towards a life based on ethical and moral values and personal responsibility.
Furthermore, to be able to nurture both their intellectual growth and the growth of their
character.

EDEN101 Grammar and Language for Academic Purposes
This unit will enable student-teachers to teach ‘Grammar’ at Elementary, JuniorPrimary and SeniorPrimary levels. An important focus of this unit will be to develop the student-teachers’ own skills in grammar, punctuation and spelling. As well as learning the relevant subject knowledge, student-teachers will learn how to plan, teach and assess the content in an interactive and stimulating environment at each level. The first element of this unit is ‘Writing for Academic Purposes’, which will introduce student-teachersto basic research methods and the conventions of academic writing. This will support them in the writing of all of their future assignments.
